The Rongai Route is the only route that appraoches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border and retains a sense of untouched wilderness lost on the crowded and more popular Marangu and Machame routes. It ia argueably the easiest of all the routes with a relatively gentle gradient and short daily stages and offers the greatest variation and the best chance of summiting. It ascends past farmland and forest, Alpine moorland to the beautiful summit cone and has splendid views throughout, with possibilities for wildlife viewing.
Rongai route is perfect for those who are not confident in their ability to hike over steep trails, those who want to avoid crowded routes, and those who take pleasure in a quietertrek. It is also preferred when climbing during the rainy season because the north side of the mountain receives less rainfall. The route takes five days minimum to complete, although six days is recommended with an extra day for acclimatization beneath Mawenzi peak. The Kilimanjaro National Park authorities rule is that the descent must be via Marangu Route, which is the most popular route on the mountain.
